Our Amish craftsmen bring the experience and precision required to build truly custom cabinetry. Working in 1/16-inch increments, we virtually eliminate the need for fillers and achieve a clean, tailored fit in every space. Extended end stiles can be added when needed to account for uneven or out-of-square walls.

Our construction methods also allow multiple cabinet sections to be built as one seamless unit, helping simplify the installation process while creating a more refined finished appearance.

We offer a variety of cabinetry styles, including hardwood face frame and frameless construction, with door options such as full overlay, partial overlay, inset, and beaded inset.

Cabinet Construction Options

Penwood offers four primary cabinet construction styles. 
  • Face Frame Overlay
  • Face Frame Inset
  • Face Frame Beaded Inset 
  • Frameless
Each style provides a distinctive appearance while maintaining the same attention to materials, construction and finish. 
Beaded inset construction adds a decorative bead around the face-frame openings for a more detailed, traditional appearance. (3D construction images coming soon.)

Construction Standards

Base Cabinet Standards:
  • 3/4" plywood sides and deck
  • 9/16" dovetailed maple hardwood drawer-box sides
  • 3/8" plywood drawer-box bottoms
  • Natural finish standard on drawer boxes
  • Interior stained or painted to match exterior
Wall Cabinet Standards:
  • 3/4" plywood sides, top and deck
  • Plywood adjustable shelves
  • Interior stained or painted to match exterior

Face Frame Overlay

Base Cabinet

  • Overlay doors and drawers
  • Standard 1/4" gaps between doors and drawers
  • Doors and drawers flush with finished ends
  • 3/4" solid wood face frame secured with pocket screws and glue
  • 1/4" plywood back with 3/4" nailers at top and bottom
  • Finished end lock-mitered to face frame
  • Integrated panel on finished end
  • Open toe kick on finished end

Four simple steps from concept to completion.
We make ordering custom cabinetry straightforward and efficient.

1. Provide Initial Layout:

Submit a basic floor layout with wall measurements, ceiling height, and window/door placement. DWG blueprint files are preferred for new construction, but other kitchen plans or even hand-drawn sketches work just fine as a starting point.

2. Share Your Vision:

Tell us what matters most: function, style, and any inspiration you may have. Providing website links, client preferences, and reference images helps our design team understand your goals.

3. Review a 3D Draft:

We will create an initial rendering for your review. Share your feedback, and we’ll adjust the design as needed.

4. Finalize & Approve:

After the design is dialed in, you provide a final approval signature. Your project is then locked into our production schedule to ensure delivery meets the agreed-upon timeline.
